Nieuwe Nieuwsmarkt 1: Housing Struggle
Femke Dekker & Werker
17:00 25-05-2024
A broadcast from the San Serriffe bookstore to mark the launch of Nieuwe Nieuwsmarkt (NNM), a biannual magazine for, about, and from the Nieuwmarkt neighbourhood in Amsterdam. NNM is an initiative of Werker Collective and aims to address urgent matters affecting the lives of people in Amsterdam - which could also resonate with a wider audience. By presenting stories, documents, and photos from both the past and the present, they create space for new collective actions.
NNM takes its name from Nieuwsmarkt, a bulletin issued between 1971 and 1972 by the Action Group Nieuwmarkt in protest (with success) against the municipality’s plans to demolish the Nieuwmarkt and Lastage neighbourhoods to build a highway and metro line.
The first issue is edited by Femke Dekker (Loma Doom) with Werker, focusing on housing struggle. How did citizens of the past resist homelessness and speculation in Amsterdam? What resources does the new generation of Amsterdammers have? This and more will be discussed during a live radio broadcast hosted by Femke Dekker in conversation with Bruno Ruggeri, Experimental Jetset, Hasan Halilov, joy mariama smith, Luna Hupperetz, Nur Horsanalı, Spookstad and Werker.
