New HHHorizons pt.1 w/ Alec Mateo

17:30 19-10-2023
During ADE 2023, Ja Ja Ja Nee Nee Nee is collaborating with Het HEM and Horst Arts & Music FEstival on two evenings of interdisciplinary live performances at the Thomaskerk, called New HHHorizons. On both Thursday 19 October and Friday 20 October, Ja Ja Ja Nee Nee Nee opens proceedings with a free two-hour programme. For each evening, founders Arif Kornweitz and Radna Rumping have prepared a listening session, introducing (excerpts of) sound works from their archive - during the listening session visitors are invited to move through the brutalist church building freely. Following this will be a live performance by one of our Spring 2023 artists in residence.
On Thursday 19 October, 2023 resident Alec Mateo performs ‘Gotchu Pt. 10.19.23’: "Part of a perpetual negotiation with narrative. Dynamic remnants made magnetic. Sounds and stories in service of the fugitive; and song. Thoughts on rest and commitment from on the train toward Flatbush; splayed."
You can also listen to an earlier version of this performance as an outcome of Alec’s residency here.
Please note that this event is in-person only and will not be broadcast.
Alec Mateo is a Dominican artist from New York working with words, sounds, and gestures to explore emancipated modes of being by negotiating relationships to narrative. Fueled by the Black Radical tradition and fealty to hip-hop, ambient and folk music, Mateo's work uses sound to create spaces that attempt to betray the violence inherent to story, and instead find within them spaces of contemplation, reflection, and ultimately joy.
